Notes:
The base ISO 9000 standard series consist of two guidelines and three standards.
ISO 9000-1 guideline or the US version Q9000-1 is a document that basically helps a organization choose which ISO 9000 standard applies to their organization.
For example, if an organization designs, develops, produces, installs and provides services for their product or service, this guideline would direct to use standard ISO 9001.
If an organization receives the design or a product or service from their customer or another organization, they would use ISO 9002.
If an organization only needs a quality system that requires inspection and test of their product or service, they would use ISO 9003. This standard has been applied in the past to small manufacturers and distributors. But, since it is based upon after the fact quality control where you can only sort out scrap or errors, most organizations are going to ISO 9002.
The other ISO 9000 guideline, is ISO 9004-1, which provides more in-depth information on how to implement the elements in the other ISO 9000 standards. It also has additional quality system elements that are focused on reducing cost, product safety and customer satisfaction. This guideline is not intended for registration use, but is very helpful when and organization needs to go beyond the ISO 9000 requirements for internal, customer or competitive business reasons.
There are the ISO standards the support the implementation of these standards such as: Internal auditing, software and services.
